In this space—Grandparenting With a Blank Slate—we talk about beginning again with open hearts, open hands, and open lives. Today’s reflection centers on one of the most powerful and challenging callings of grandparenting: listening without judgment.
One of the greatest gifts a grandparent can offer is the gift of being truly heard. In a world overflowing with opinions, corrections, and quick reactions, many grandchildren are searching for just one place where they can speak freely—where they feel safe, loved, and accepted. Listening without judgment may be one of the purest forms of love a grandparent can practice. Listening Creates Emotional Safety Listening without judgment creates emotional safety. When grandchildren talk about school, friendships, doubts, mistakes, dreams, or fears, they are rarely asking for solutions. More often, they are asking a deeper question: Am I still loved if I tell the truth? When we listen without interrupting, correcting, minimizing, or belittling, we answer that question with a resounding yes. This kind of listening says, You belong. Your feelings matter. You don’t have to perform to earn my love. Emotional safety builds trust, and trust is the foundation of lasting relationships. Judgment Closes Doors; Curiosity Opens Them Even well-intended judgment can shut conversations down. Many of us know the feeling—sharing something vulnerable only to hear, “That was silly,” or “I wouldn’t have done it that way.” The conversation ends immediately. The same is true with our grandchildren. Phrases like “When I was your age…” or “You shouldn’t feel that way” may contain truth, but they often close doors instead of opening hearts. Curiosity, on the other hand, invites conversation. Simple responses such as “Tell me more about that,” “What was that like for you?” or “How did that make you feel?” communicate respect. Curiosity does not mean agreement—it means your grandchild is worth listening to. The Unique Listening Role of Grandparents Grandparents occupy a unique space. We are not the disciplinarians, rule-keepers, or performance evaluators. Our role is to be a steady presence and a witness to growth. Because of that, grandchildren often share things with grandparents that they are not ready to share elsewhere. Our job is not to fix—but to hold the space. Sometimes the most faithful response is simply, “I’m glad you told me. Thank you.” Those words carry extraordinary power. I once heard a story of a teenage granddaughter who had grown quiet at family gatherings. While washing dishes together, her grandparent gently asked, “How are you really doing?” The grandparent listened—fully, patiently, without judgment. Later, the granddaughter said, “Thank you for not telling me what to do. I just needed someone to hear me.” That moment didn’t solve everything, but it transformed their relationship. Listening as Love and Legacy Listening without judgment is more than a communication skill—it is a legacy practice. Years from now, grandchildren may not remember every conversation, but they will remember who made them feel safe, who listened when life felt confusing, and who loved them without conditions. That is how faith, values, and wisdom are passed on—not through lectures, but through presence. Listening becomes the soil where trust, resilience, and love quietly grow. Practical Listening Tips for Grandparents Here are a few simple practices that can make a meaningful difference: Pause before responding. Silence communicates respect and care. Listen for feelings, not just facts. Pay attention to emotions beneath the words. Resist the urge to fix. Presence often matters more than advice. Affirm before offering wisdom. Let them know their feelings are valid. Ground yourself. Cultivate patience, compassion, and humility. Many of these practices—and more—are explored in my book Grandparenting With a Blank Slate. Grandparenting is a journey of learning and relearning, and listening is where it often begins. A Closing Invitation Grandparenting with a blank slate starts with open ears and an open heart. When you listen without judgment, you become a place of refuge—a reminder of comfort and safety. May your presence speak louder than your words, and may your legacy with your grandchildren be one of compassion, trust, and enduring connection. Until next time, keep listening deeply—and keep loving well.
